Montana State University Bozeman Campus - Bozeman, MT Area Guide

Montana’s largest university is a cultural touchstone for the state

Public College Town Historic Bobcats MSU

Montana State University offers a unique academic and research facility largely shaped by its surrounding environment. Sometimes known as the “University of Yellowstone” thanks to its close proximity to the famous national park, MSU has built a strong curriculum around the pristine natural landscape, even offering the world’s only MFA degree in Science and Natural History Filmmaking. The on-campus Museum of the Rockies is home to the world’s largest T.Rex skull, and university researchers regularly earn National Science Foundation grants for Yellowstone-related projects. The MSU campus sits just a few blocks south of Main Street, AKA Highway 191, which is lined with popular restaurants, bars, galleries, and coffeehouses. Drop in for breakfast at Nova Café, or grab a pint and a slice of pizza after hours at Bar IX. The area between the Main Street strip and the MSU campus is mostly filled with residential neighborhoods, and many of the affordable houses, condos, and apartments for rent offer convenient walking distance to both the university and the commercial district.
