The University of Central Missouri is a public university established in 1871 as a teachers college. After several name changes, it became the University of Central Missouri in 2006. The school offers more than 150 majors and minors. The Central Missouri Mules (men) and Jennies (women) participate in a variety of sports, including football, basketball, and baseball. They are part of NCAA Division II, participating in the MIAA Conference. Its 1,561-acre campus is located in Warrensburg, a terrific city with several claims to fame, including originating the phrase, "man's best friend." That phrase is attributed to an 1870 court case, where lawyer George Graham Vest represented a dog-owner whose faithful friend was shot and killed by a neighbor. Vest delivered a now-famous closing argument that is considered one of the most memorable passages ever delivered in a courtroom, where he argues that a dog is the "best friend of man." A statue of a dog stands in front of the Johnson County Courthouse in Warrensburg. UCM is located right in the heart of Warrensburg, making it easy to find apartments close to campus. The university is located between East South Street and East Clark Street, with the AJ Walton football stadium located at the corner of South Washington Street and West South Street. If you plan to travel by train to Kansas City (one hour northwest) or Saint Louis (three hours east), the Warrensburg Station is located near the intersection of Marshall Street and South Holden Street on the north end of UCM.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
