The University of Maryland, Baltimore County has built a strong reputation for itself as one of the most rigorous institutions in the Mid-Atlantic region. As an honors college, UMBC challenges students to reach their fullest potential, supported by one of the highest-ranked faculties in the nation. The facility’s pioneering research has also led to the establishment of Maryland’s first university research park. The Retrievers sports teams have shown great success in the NCAA, with the men’s soccer team in particular hosting extremely popular home games. UMBC is also renowned for its competitive chess team, which regularly advances to the top of the Pan American Chess Tournament. The area surrounding the campus features a few popular eateries and other hangouts, but is mostly made up of quiet residential neighborhoods. Ten minutes west of Downtown Baltimore and 45 minutes northeast of Washington, DC, UMBC puts you within arm’s reach of two cities jam packed with great things to occupy your free time. Downtown Baltimore and the Inner Harbor feature a number of great restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and live music venues alongside to more tourist-centric attractions, and a short hop down to the nation’s capital is a great way to spend a weekend soaking in some of the region’s finest dining and nightlife.
