The University of Kansas sits atop a historic hill known as Mount Oread. It was a challenge for settlers along the Oregon Trail, and it was the staging area for William Quantrill's raid during the Civil War. It is the highest point in Lawrence, making it the ideal location for the stately campus. Founded in 1865, the KU campus covers more than 1,000 acres.
