Sitting about five miles north of Downtown Indianapolis, the private Butler University campus covers roughly 295 acres. Founded in 1855, Butler University began as North Western Christian University and was founded by Ovid Butler. Ranking as one of the top universities in the Midwest, Butler offers more than 60 academic programs. The Butler Bulldogs compete in NCAA Division I as part of the Pioneer Football League and the Big East Conference. The Bulldogs football team competes at Butler Bowl stadium. The basketball teams play at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, which was built in 1928 and is a National Historic Landmark.
