Since its inception in 1897, San Diego State has been one of the most respected universities in Southern California. The university’s reputation as a first-rate academic environment is matched only by its acclaim as one of the most fun places to attend college in America. The farmers’ market on Thursdays is a great place to find some amazing fresh meals from local vendors selling everything from barbecue to Asian food. Late-night chow from Pancho’s and Trujillo’s is always a welcome suggestion after an evening out or an all-night study session. The campus Aquaplex is a terrific place to take advantage of San Diego’s near-constant sunshine, with swimming pools, hot tubs, and tanning areas perfect for spending a relaxing afternoon. And of course, the region’s terrific outdoor options are close at hand as well, with Mission Trails Regional Park directly north of campus and the beautiful Pacific beaches just a few minutes to the west. Budget-friendly housing options near campus are fairly limited, with most of the surrounding neighborhoods filled with single-family homes. However, numerous apartments and condos are available within biking distance, generally a few blocks southwest of the main campus in the Mid-City area.
