Embrace the small-town Pacific Northwest experience in Monmouth/Independence. Situated in the Willamette Valley, just 15 miles southwest of Salem, this large neighborhood contains the cities of Monmouth and Independence, as well as the surrounding rural areas.
A drive through Monmouth/Independence takes you past sleepy residential streets and well-preserved stone facades from the area's early days. Don't let the peace fool you — the community bursts with festivals and events. In the summer, check out Western Days and the Rivers Edge Summer Series, or sample locally-brewed beers at the Hop & Heritage Festival. When the snow falls, residents look forward to the tree-lighting at the Hometown Holiday Festival.
Stay close to the action with an apartment in downtown Monmouth or downtown Independence. Monmouth locals congregate for pesto chicken pizza and craft beer at Yeasty Beasty; in Independence, try the famous duck confit and bacon sandwich at the Three Legged Dog Public House. For a private piece of paradise, look for homes near the farm fields and forested hills outside of city limits.

Independence is a very cute, small town. There is some diversity, likely due to the proximity to Western Oregon University in Monmouth. The people are very nice, the roads are clean and safe, and the public schools are great.

Independence is the type of American small town where there truly isn't much to do. Children who grow up here have access to below average quality of education within our school district. I do not like the lack of quality education here. I also do not like the lack of general resources for the people in our community. I do like how safe it is here. You often see young children walking alone around the town because we are privileged here in Independence to have a safe enough environment for children to do so. I would like to see a better sense of community within the town of Independence and among its residents. We occasionally have community events in the summer but throughout the winter months I believe there is a significant lack of community here in Independence. This lack can lead to increased rates of depression and anxiety. Providing opportunities and recourses for members of our town is very important for not only physical health and well-being but also mental health.

I have enjoyed living here for the past 4 years. It is an amazing atmosphere and the only downside is the housing market here. As soon as there is a perfect house on the market I want to be prepared to purchse this home. This town is extremely safe and I have never felt any danger.

Quiet and laid back community surrounded by scenery and grape fields. you are within an hour driving distance if you would like to go to the ocean, the mountains or to go into the city to see a concert or a ballgame.
