Located directly across the James River from Lynchburg, Madison Heights is a wooded, suburban community offering easy commutes into the city. The Lynchburg Expressway helps residents reach Downtown Lynchburg in about five minutes. It is also the main commercial strip in Madison Heights, lined with a variety of shops and restaurants.

Settled around 1786, Madison Heights has a long and interesting history. It also features several historic sites, such a s Galt’s Mill Complex. This mill, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built around 1813. Oak Lawn, also on the national register, is a house built around 1810. Fort Riverview, an archaeological site, served as a redoubt during the Civil War.

To enjoy the natural landscape, head to Percival’s Island Natural Area, an island in the James River. This is a terrific place to walk, bike ride, or view nature. Riveredge Park provides scenic views of Lynchburg, terrific river views with a fountain, a hiking and biking trail, and a playground.
