History

-

The neighborhood of Los Altos began as an inexpensive area made up of small homes, most of which were purchased through the G.I. Bill. The land was developed by Lloyd Whaley in the late 1940s and was mostly isolated, with few amenities nearby. By the late 1960s, much had been done to improve the neighborhood, including the construction of churches, schools, popular chain stores and local restaurants. The area can now be considered middle to upper class, with The California State University at Long Beach maintaining an elite reputation for excellence in higher education.

The annual Tour of Long Beach includes a bicycle tour of the city to support pediatric cancer research. Participants can choose to pedal the full 100 mile course or choose between a 62-mile, 30-mile or 5-mile course. The iconic Queen Mary remains a popular attraction for those interested in the ship's wildly famous history.
