Lantana, FL Area Guide

The M.B. Lyman family is credited with founding the town after arriving in 1888, quickly establishing a general store, a trading post, and a post office. As postmaster, Lyman named that post office Lantana Point, after the wild lantana plants growing abundantly throughout the area. The word Point was eventually dropped, and the name stuck.

Walking or driving through Lantana today, the town's layered past shows up in its older ranch-style and bungalow homes, many painted in pastels on small, manicured lots. Across the bridge along East Ocean Avenue, the properties on Hypoluxo Island take on a grander scale, reflecting the area's evolution from a modest frontier settlement into a sought-after coastal address.

East Ocean Boulevard, running from Route 1 toward Hypoluxo Island, is the heart of Lantana's locally owned dining scene, where waterfront settings and casual menus make for relaxed meals. Lantana Road offers a more everyday lineup of chain options for quick stops between errands.

For a wider selection of cuisines and evening options, West Palm Beach is about 11 miles away and adds considerably more variety. The town also hosts the annual Barefoot Mailman Family Day in March, which brings food vendors to Lantana Beach alongside live music and craft sellers.

Interstate 95 runs along Lantana's west side, connecting residents to the broader South Florida road network in either direction. US-1, known locally as Federal Highway, serves as the main north-south corridor through town, while Lantana Road and East Ocean Boulevard handle east-west travel out to the barrier island. West Palm Beach, roughly 11 miles north, expands the options considerably for those seeking larger malls, specialty retailers, or a broader range of services. Nearby shopping centers including Ye Tower Plaza, Lantana Village Square, and Lantana Center sit within a mile of town center for added convenience.

A town-operated public beach, Intracoastal Waterway access, and a compact, walkable layout make Lantana a genuinely appealing find in Palm Beach County.
