Around 1750, a stretch of land along the Ohio River was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from William Penn’s heirs. It was supposedly named for an English Duke, “Emsworth.” Today, Emsworth is an attractive borough located roughly six miles north of Downtown Pittsburgh. Known for its hills, mountain views, and cobblestone streets, Emsworth provides a beautiful setting with easy access to the city.
The popular Emsworth Community Park overlooks the mountains and includes picnic areas, a pavilion, a basketball court, and a playground. Vinegar Hollow, a popular hiking area, features hidden waterfalls, winding streams, and amazing views. Along 65th Infantry Division Memorial Highway, residents find a variety of shops, restaurants, and other businesses. Some popular destinations in Emsworth include the Anchor & Anvil Coffee Bar, Café Notte, Sunny Jim’s Tavern, and Rupes Roadhouse.
