Dahlgren, VA Area Guide

A waterfront town with an intimate atmosphere and incredible views

Close-Knit Boating Outdoors Relaxed Small Business River

Dahlgren sits just over 50 miles south of Washington, D.C. on the western shores of the Potomac River. This small Virginia town may have only 2.7 square miles of land within its borders, but it has grown rapidly from a population of less than 1,000 in the early 2000s. Dahlgren is a convenient spot for military personnel or anyone who works at the nearby Naval Support Facility.

Dahlgren Road is where locals go to grab a bite at one of the locally-owned restaurants. There are charming residential streets that branch off from the main thoroughfare and provide incredible views of Upper Machodoc Creek which forms Dahlgren’s west border. There are outdoor opportunities just west of town. Chotank Creek Natural Area Preserve and Caledon State Park make for a wonderful hike, and the Potomac is perfect for an afternoon on the boat.
