As its name implies, College Hill rises steeply from sea level to connect downtown to the city's East Side and is home to the prestigious Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Boasting some of the city's best views, College Hill is adjacent to downtown, across the Providence River. This historic neighborhood and cultural hub is home to an eclectic mixture of architectural styles that few neighborhoods possess. Many of this cobbled-street neighborhood's historic homes date back to the Revolutionary era. The pre-Colonial towers of Brown University and post-modern structures of Rhode Island School of Design blend harmoniously with the juxtaposition of Federal, Greek Revival, and Neoclassical styles that characterize the area. Affordable student housing, sleek upscale apartments, and colorful single-family homes give a modern contrast to the neighborhood’s quaint feel.
The universities dominate the neighborhood, giving it a youthful feel, but College Hill is also home to several museums, historic landmarks, parks, art galleries, casual eateries, trendy cafes, eclectic restaurants, shops, and more. Natural gas-powered trolleys and buses make this the city's best-served neighborhood for public transportation, and the area also hosts many of the state's top medical and professional facilities. For shopping, check out the boutiques and university bookstores that line Thayer Street. After hours, residents don’t have to go far for entertainment either. Dance at a concert at Dunkin' Donuts Center, catch a play at the historic Providence Performing Arts Center, or enjoy a drink at one of the many pubs in Downtown Providence, only 10 minutes away.
As of December 2025, the average apartment rent in College Hill is $1,374 for a studio, $1,932 for one bedroom, $2,229 for two bedrooms, and $3,922 for three bedrooms. Apartment rent in College Hill has increased by 1.9% in the past year.
