Area Guide

Bowmanville Chicago, IL

A cozy neighborhood minutes from the Windy City

Community Events Green Space

Bowmanville -- a small neighborhood on the north side of Lincoln Square and west of Andersonville -- began in a rather unusual way. It was around 1850, and a local inn keeper named Jesse Bowman decided to sell land in the area. The only problem was, he didn't actually own the land he sold. He then disappeared before the new "land owners" discovered they'd been swindled. Today, this beautiful, residential neighborhood is known for its elegant gardens and green space, minutes north of Downtown Chicago.

Every July, the Bowmanville Community Organization hosts the Bowmanville Garden Walk, which includes a photo contest, presentations by garden masters, and a garden party. While this is a close-knit, residential community, it does have a small but vibrant business district along Damen Avenue, which includes several restaurants, art galleries, and specialty shops.

When looking for rentals in Bowmanville, be aware that the neighborhood is located north of West Foster Avenue. It follows North Bowmanville Avenue from Western Avenue to Bryn Mawr Avenue. Ravenswood Avenue extends along the eastern side of the neighborhood. Bowmanville is about eight miles northwest of Downtown Chicago, and bus service from the Damen & Foster station leads directly to the city.
