Located just south of the New Mexico-Colorado border, Aztec is a small town with a vibrant history. Aztec is home to the famous Aztec Ruins National Monument, although mistakenly named for the Aztecs, was once the thriving cultural and spiritual capital for the ancient Pueblo people. Aztec also contains the Aztec Museum and Pioneer Park, a historic complex featuring a robust collection of authentic western Americana.
Situated on the Animas River, Aztec provides a wealth of outdoor activities with over 30 miles of mountain biking trails, an 18-hole golf course, and exceptional fishing opportunities nearby. Downtown Aztec is brimming with quaint shops, cafes, and restaurants along the historic Main Avenue as well. Larger towns such as Farmington and Durango, Colorado are easily accessible from Aztec via Route 516 and U.S. 550.
