Diverse Park-Like Nature Quiet Commuter

Annandale, Virginia sits inside Fairfax County, roughly 14 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., and its proximity to the capital shapes nearly everything about life here. The area functions as a practical, well-connected base for people who work in D.C., Arlington, or Alexandria, with Interstate 495 running directly through it. Annandale traces its roots to a sprawling pre-Revolutionary tobacco plantation called Ravensworth, and that long history gives the community a sense of place that newer suburbs often lack. Northern Virginia's government, defense, and technology sectors draw a steady stream of residents who want access to major employment corridors without paying downtown prices.

The housing stock reflects the area's evolution over decades, ranging from garden-style apartment communities and mid-rise buildings to townhomes and single-family rentals tucked into established neighborhoods. Little River Turnpike and Columbia Pike anchor much of the commercial activity, lined with international restaurants, grocery stores, and local shops that reflect Annandale's notably diverse population. Wakefield Park and Accotink Stream Valley Park offer substantial green space for outdoor recreation. With a population of roughly 43,000 spread across just eight square miles, the community feels dense enough to be convenient yet grounded enough to feel genuinely residential.

Living in Annandale

History

-

Annandale traces its roots to Ravensworth, a sprawling tobacco plantation established in 1685 when Colonel William Fitzhugh purchased over 24,000 acres of Northern Virginia wilderness. For six generations, the Fitzhugh family farmed the land, which stretched from present-day Fairfax City to Springfield and Falls Church. The plantation name faded from use around 1830 as portions were sold off, and the community of Annandale emerged in its place. Businessman William Garges helped establish the town's commercial foundation by opening a blacksmith shop, livery stable, and the county's first steam-driven saw mill.

Today, the area's historical connection to the Civil War remains visible through nearby Fort Ward Museum, a preserved fortification with exhibits exploring the period. The National Women's History Museum sits close by as well. Each October, Annandale's Fall Festival brings the community together with live entertainment, international dancers, and local vendors, reflecting both the area's long-standing traditions and its increasingly diverse character. The neighborhood's evolution from agrarian plantation to suburban community gives it a sense of continuity that newer developments around the capital region often lack.

Restaurants

-

Annandale is widely recognized as one of Northern Virginia's premier destinations for Korean food, and the concentration of Korean restaurants along Little River Turnpike and Columbia Pike reflects that reputation. From all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue to hand-rolled noodle soups, the options are plentiful and deeply rooted in the community. Beyond Korean cuisine, residents find a diverse dining landscape that includes Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, and American comfort food, most of it clustered around the Little River Turnpike and Columbia Pike corridor. The Thursday Annandale Farmers Market, running May through November, rounds out the food scene with locally grown produce, fresh breads, and artisan cheeses.

Transportation

-

Annandale is a car-dependent community where most residents rely on personal vehicles to get around. Interstate 495, the Capital Beltway, runs through the area and serves as the primary artery connecting Annandale to neighboring Arlington, Alexandria, and the broader Northern Virginia region, with Washington, D.C. roughly 40 minutes away. Little River Turnpike and Columbia Pike are the main local roads. Fairfax Connector bus service provides public transit options for those commuting without a car. Walkability and biking infrastructure are limited, though sidewalks are present along major corridors. Reagan National Airport is the closest commercial airport, easily accessible via the Beltway.

Parks

-

Annandale is well served by a substantial network of parks spread throughout the community. Wakefield Park is among the most active, offering running and biking trails, lighted basketball and tennis courts, a skateboard park, and a recreation center. Mason District Park provides a more relaxed setting with nature trails, a basketball court, picnic areas, and a playground. Accotink Stream Valley Park covers 493 acres and centers on a lake with water sports, fishing, mini golf, and an antique carousel. Annandale Community Park connects residents to a creek for fishing and includes the Hidden Oaks Nature Center, where families can explore local ecosystems alongside open green space ideal for picnicking.

Cost

-

Annandale sits within Fairfax County, one of the higher-cost areas in the Northern Virginia region, and rental prices reflect that positioning. Studios average around $1,710 per month, one-bedroom apartments near $1,876, and two-bedroom units around $2,183, with three-bedroom homes reaching approximately $2,808. Rents have trended slightly downward across all unit sizes compared to the prior year. The community's housing mix includes both apartment complexes and single-family homes, giving renters a range of options at varying price points. The median household income in Annandale is $112,500, which provides context for the local rental market.

Shopping

-

Annandale's retail activity centers largely along Little River Turnpike and Columbia Pike, where a mix of everyday conveniences and specialty shops reflects the community's diverse character. The corridor is particularly known for Korean and Asian-owned businesses, including skincare boutiques and fashion retailers that give the area a distinct identity. The Annandale Shopping Center on Gallows Road brings together chain stores and local storefronts in a familiar neighborhood format. Residents can also browse the Annandale Farmers Market, held on Thursdays from May through November, where vendors sell seasonal produce, orchard fruits, fresh breads, and cheeses sourced from local farms.
