Albemarle is a small city in North Carolina roughly 40 miles east of Downtown Charlotte. It is a charming community with a fascinating history. The city is named for British General George Monck, who led his troops to victory during the English Civil War, which ended in 1651 with Charles II, son of executed King Charles I, coming out of exile to be restored as king. King Charles II was so grateful for Monck’s efforts that he granted him land in the Colonies and named him Duke of Albemarle.

Explore the history of Albemarle in the city’s many historic districts, including the charming Downtown Albemarle Historic District. But while you’ll love strolling along Main Street and enjoying the many shops and restaurants housed in historic buildings, the surrounding landscape is equally impressive. Albemarle is located in the Piedmont’s Uwharrie Lakes region, and it is close to several popular lakes. It is also near Morrow Mountain State Park and Uwharrie National Forest. These two parks provide opportunities for hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, camping, fishing, and more.
