Laconia, NH is the county seat of Belknap County in central New Hampshire, and a tiny, rural town of only about 16,000 people. It is known for its many lakes and lake resorts, and for its beautiful scenery. It is a quiet, cozy and picturesque place to live.

Finding Apartments for Rent in Laconia, NH

Since Laconia is such a small town, there aren't many large apartment complexes located there. The town just doesn't have the market for it. Most of the apartment rentals in Laconia are in private homes. These are homes that have converted either part or all of the building into apartments for rent. Some houses have the landlord living on site, with one to four apartments upstairs (or even as outbuildings). Other houses have been entirely divided up and converted into small apartment buildings with four to six units, with the houses themselves being owned by private people instead of companies.

There are a couple of smaller apartment complexes in Laconia, but the majority of apartments are in converted houses. The prices are very reasonable because the town is so rural and out of the way.

Top Neighborhoods in Laconia, NH

Being a small town, most of Laconia is just one big neighborhood. At only 26.6 square miles in area, there's not much room for a lot of different neighborhoods. The one exception is Governor's Crossing, a planned community of higher end houses that is located within the city limits of Laconia. This is the neighborhood people choose who have a lot of cash to spend on a house in this area. With houses averaging in the $200,000 to $300,000 area, you pay for a perfectly designed and landscaped newer neighborhood that sits on the edge of a lake and has gorgeous mountain views.

If there is a best neighborhood in Laconia, Governor's Crossing is it. However, Laconia as a whole is a lovely place, and you can still get beautiful views in many of the apartments and older homes in town while paying a lot less.

Weather in Laconia, NH

Like the rest of New Hampshire, Laconia has four distinct seasons. Winter is the longest, and can last from October to May in some extreme cases. More often, the snow falls from November to April, starting and ending with light snow, with heavy snow concentrated December through February. Spring is cool and wet, with lots of rain. Summer is warm and seasonable, with lots of sunshine and plenty of opportunities for getting outdoors and enjoying nature.

Fall is a beautiful time of year in Laconia and all of New England, with a gorgeous change in the color of the leaves that brings people from miles around to admire it. Fall is cool without being cold, so it's perfect for getting in some leaf viewing while sipping a cup of hot apple cider made with local apples. The peak fall leaf season in the Laconia area of New Hampshire usually only lasts from September to October each year.

Sports in Laconia, NH

Laconia hosts the Laconia Muskrats, which is a New England Collegiate Baseball League team. The Muskrats play their home games at Robbie Mills Field in Laconia. Games are played throughout the summer and are very popular events with local residents. The people of Laconia love to cheer on their home team!

Cultural Attractions in Laconia, NH

For such a small town, Laconia does have a number of interesting and important cultural attractions. Among them are the Belknap Mill Society Museum, the Winnipesaukee Playhouse, the Funspot Family Fun Center, and the Lake Winnipisaukee Historical Society Museum. The Belknap Mill Society Museum is of particular interest, as it is the oldest unaltered brick textile mill in the United States, and was one of the first buildings to be listed on the new National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It's motto, "Where Art and History Come to Life" accurately reflects the museum's focus on showing the history of textiles in the region as it actually was, while being entertaining and educational at the same time. The building is four stories and includes a museum, an art gallery, a concert hall, and meeting spaces for special events. It's a popular gathering spot for local activities.

The Winnipesaukee Playhouse is the only professional theater in the Laconia region of New Hampshire. It produces both a professional summer stock season and a community theater season, and is the only theater in the United States to do both. Originally located in Laconia proper, it was moved just a few miles away to Meredith in 2013 to provide upgrades to the theater, such as additional seating, a lobby, and a ticket booth. It is always a wonderful place to catch a good show year round.

The Funspot Family Fun Center is a "gaming museum," and hosts the annual International Classic Video & Pinball Tournament. The Guinness Book of World Records named it the Largest Arcade in the World in 2008. It has 400 video games from the 1970's and 1980's, an indoor golf course, a bowling alley, a cash bingo game, a restaurant, and more. It is a place for people of all ages to go and have fun in the lakes region of New Hampshire.

Finally, the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society Museum is open from June through October each year and is dedicated to preserving the history of the Laconia lakes region of New Hampshire. It has many permanent and traveling exhibits featuring artifacts and research from the area's past, as well as bingo on Tuesday and Saturday nights during the open season, and a fully stocked gift shop. The bingo and gift shop help the museum fund expansions and repairs to make it a better place to visit, and also provide opportunities for socializing with neighbors and visitors to the area in a fun environment.
