Small-town southern charm and collegiate energy intersect in Hattiesburg, a small city on Interstate 59 just north of De Soto National Forest. The northwestern corner of the city largely revolves around the University of Southern Mississippi, a medium-sized college that serves as the main cultural hub for the city. Locals often head to the campus for Golden Eagles sporting events, traveling exhibitions, and stage performances. Largely thanks to the student population, Hattiesburg boasts a vibrant nightlife scene full of patio bars and lively nightclubs.
Things get considerably calmer a few blocks out from the Southern Miss campus, with tree-shaded suburban streets and tranquil city parks creating a placid atmosphere for folks who prefer peace and quiet. The historic Downtown area is a popular hangout for locals of all ages, featuring a collective of quaint storefronts, galleries, and performance venues.

Living in Hattiesburg
Two of the top offerings for fine dining in the area include the Purple Parrot Cafe and Brownstone's. The Purple Parrot is the perfect place of a romantic evening. Both the menu and wine list have won numerous awards and recognitions. Menu choices include everything from lobster to red fish to lamb to steaks. Just next door is its sister eatery, Crescent City which also has excellent food but for those on a smaller budget. Located downtown, Brownstone's is a cozy place that offers some the best seafood outside of New Orleans. This is a place where you can try something a little different. Menu selections include crab claws, fried alligator, tuna, cajun pasta, steaks, and gumbo. The setting is small, without a cramped feeling, plus the open kitchen adds to the relaxed atmosphere. One unique feature is that this restaurant allows half-size portions, at nearly half-price. Less expensive but other great places to try in the area include The Keg and Barrel, LongHorn Steakhouse, Petra Cafe and Hookah, Movie Star Restaurant & Catering, The Depot Coffee House & Bistro, Edo Sushi Asian Cuisine, Glory Bound Gyro Company, Georgia Blue, Half Shell Oyster House, and Mrs. Butta Bean. Remember that this is a college town so there is no shortage of buffets, bars, and all night eateries.
Turtle Creek Mall, the leading shopping center in the southern Mississippi area is home to over 80 favorite stores including American Eagle Outfitters, Aeropostale, Bath & Body Works, Foot Locker, Gap, Hibbett Sports, New York & Company, and Victoria's Secret. The anchor stores are Belk, Dillard's, JCPenney, Sears and Stein Mart. A multi-million dollar renovation, completed in November of 2012 makes Turtle Creek one of the best places to shop with 100 miles. The downtown area offers a world of great craft and vaiety shows including A Gallery & Plums, Calico Mall Antiques, Go Young Fashion, Main Street Books, Sacks Outdoors, Southern Fried Comics, The Lucky Rabbit, Twin Forks Wine and Provisions, and Walnut Square Pharmacy & Old Time Gift.
