Restaurants

Fort McKinley houses several fast-food restaurants, as well as a couple of locally owned establishments, most of which sit along Salem and West Siebenthaler avenues. For fluffy and delicious pancakes and a range of tasty breakfast items, locals head to the Legacy Pancake House. If you're really hungry, try the Las Vegas plate. It offers enough to feed two.

Szechuan Taste on West Siebenthaler Avenue serves typical take-out-style Chinese food, but locals like the restaurant's fast delivery time. Keep in mind the restaurant charges a delivery fee. Like most Chinese restaurants in the area, Szechuan Taste serves large portions of food at reasonable prices. Regulars recommend the restaurant's General Tso's chicken and egg rolls.

El Greco's Pizza Villa on Salem Avenue has a menu that features Italian, American and Mexican food. It features a variety of pasta dishes, subs and chicken fingers, but most people visit El Greco's for its pizza and tacos. In fact, many regular customers consider El Greco's tacos the best tacos in the area, and they're half price on Taco Tuesdays.

Fort McKinley doesn't have much of a nightlife scene, but a few small bars sit in adjacent neighborhoods. Markey Lounge on North Main Street, a cocktail bar that draws a decent after-work crowd, has a laid-back atmosphere that locals love. However, if you want to mingle with a larger crowd of people, visit the bars and dance clubs in the Oregon District, which sits directly east of downtown.

History

In the early 1800s, squatters settled in Harrison Township. After a gristmill and sawmill were built along the Stillwater River in 1812, more people moved into the area creating small communities, including Fort McKinley. The population grew slowing throughout the 20th century, and by the turn of the 21st century, Fort McKinley was home to almost 4,000 people.

Fort McKinley residents visit downtown Dayton to peruse the Dayton Arts Institute, see a live theater performance at the Victoria Theater or the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, and attend annual events, such as the Hispanic Heritage Festival and the Dayton Celtic Festival.

Transportation

With ample free parking provided by nearby businesses and a short drive to the interstate, driving proves to be the easiest mode of transportation for Fort McKinley residents. Interstate 75 and State Route 49 sit less than 5 miles from the community.

You can’t hail a cab in Fort McKinley, and Uber doesn’t service the area, but area cab companies do arrange for pickup via telephone. Because you have to call a cab company to schedule a ride, it’s often easier to ride the bus. Greater Dayton RTA has several bus routes that run through the area, which serve as the most popular mode of transportation for residents who don’t own vehicles.

Even though Fort McKinley sits on fairly flat land, you may well decide to avoid walking or riding a bike to your destination. The community doesn’t have dedicated bike lanes or sidewalks, so these aren't the safest options.

Cost

The cost of living in Fort McKinley averages slightly higher than the overall cost of living in Dayton. Slightly higher housing costs are part of the small increase in the cost of living, while other necessities remain on par with the rest of the city. Expect to pay around $479 per month to rent a one-bedroom apartment.

A beer at a local bar sets you back about $3, and a one-way bus ride into the city's center costs $1.75. Typically, gas prices average around 9 percent less than the national average.

Shopping

Northwest Plaza Shopping Center sits directly east of Fort McKinley, at the corner of West Siebenthaler Avenue and Philadelphia Drive. Here you'll find Kings Furniture Superstore, Essence Beauty Supply, and Family Dollar.

Simply Fashion, also located in the Northwest Shopping Plaza, specializes in women’s clothing. The store also offers handbags, accessories, and shoes. Men shop for clothing at New York Hi Styles, located a few storefronts away from Simply Fashion. The store specializes in business attire and offers tailoring and alteration services. Just west of Fort McKinley, Salem Avenue houses several smaller stores, convenience stores, and pharmacies.

Fort McKinley residents complete their grocery shopping at the Kroger on West Siebenthaler Avenue or Save-A-Lot, IGA Supermarkets and Stop ‘N’ Shop on North Gettysburg Avenue. For in-between-trip necessities, Express Mart on North Gettysburg Avenue carries decent selection of basic necessities.

Visit the 2nd Street Market in Downtown Dayton to purchase fresh produce and baked goods. The year-round farmers market opens every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Parks

Fort McKinley doesn’t house any neighborhood parks, but you don’t have to look far to find a suitable playground for your kids to enjoy. Fairview Park, located on McCleary Avenue just south of Fairview Elementary School and Salem Heights Playground on Parkhill Drive feature playground equipment.

Less than 5 miles south of Fort McKinley, Island MetroPark attracts families, exercise enthusiasts and dog owners. The park has several playgrounds and a water play area for kids, and more than 2 miles of paved trails where people walk their dogs, jog and ride bikes.

The parks are free for regular recreational us. You can enjoy a summer concert at a local bandstand or take the family to Island MetroPark for a great view of Dayton’s Fourth of July fireworks display, hosted by RiverScape MetroPark, which sits directly across the river from Island MetroPark.
