Restaurants

Plenty of cuisine options await area residents out for a nice dining experience. Diners can take in amazing views of the Pacific Ocean at Ewa Beach Golf Course Restaurant. Whether you decide to golf or not, come out and enjoy the ambiance while feasting on the furikake-crusted salmon or the massive barbecue bacon burger. For a lighter option, order the apple salad.

If you're craving a mix of Chinese and Hawaiian food, head to Ohana Drive Inn. The customers rave about the honey-garlic chicken and Mochiko chicken. The egg drop soup and Mongolian beef make appetizing choices as well. When having a party, let Ohana Drive Inn cater your event; when you spend more than $150,delivery is free.

Locals seeking some Mexican food flock to Fiesta's Mexican Grill. The kitchen sink burrito and green enchiladas melt in your mouth. If you can't decide on what to order, try a combo platter and sample small portions of your favorite choices. Make sure you save room for dessert - the fried ice cream satisfies any sweet tooth. After spending most of the day in the sun, many tend to call it an early night but those looking for a night out on the town find a couple of local bars in the immediate area. The Ville at Park Row offers karaoke, pupus, beer, wine and spirits. An outdoor lounge attracts locals who want to sip on a cocktail and watch the sunset. Catch up with friends over a game of pool or a round of darts. Saturdays draw bigger crowds because of the music and dancing.

Visit Tings Place for a wonderfully relaxing experience. Highly rated by locals, locally owned Tings' humble location and exceptional service make it a popular spot for drinks and bar food. However, bring cash, since they don't take cards. For more of a nightclub experience, head to downtown Honolulu.

History

Locals relish in the myth that Ewa Beach came to existence from the gods, who happened to be playing with stones. These stones rolled away into the place known as Ewa, which means "stray," "crooked" or "ill-fitting" in Hawaiian. The county became incorporated in 1907 and has remained an outstanding dwelling area for those who prefer sunshine, hitting the beach and splashing in the waters.

In order to experience the culture of Ewa, jump aboard a train from the Hawaiian Railway Society, which acts as an educational museum. The 90-minute ride includes narration of the vicinity's history along with breathtaking views.

Ewa Beach also houses the Performing Artist Academy for those into the arts scene. Attend several annual events, including festivals, concerts, and art and film festivals. Golfers love the Battle at the Beach tournament, typically held in August each year.

Transportation

Many navigate around Ewa Beach on foot, bike, moped or motorcycle. Hailing a cab is fairly easy, and Uber also provides service to the area. Biking paths lie along the beach, and although streets can be a bit congested with traffic, many cyclists bike on the sidewalks or the shoulders.

If you prefer public transportation, Oahu's Transit Service, Thebus, runs several lines throughout the area. Those who own their own vehicles can find parking around the vicinity. Some lots require fees, but many are free of charge. Ewa Beach lies near Highway 76, which connects to Farrington Highway and the H-1 Freeway.

Cost

The cost of living in Ewa Beach comes in at nine percent less than the Honolulu average, but 60 percent higher than the national average. A one-way bus fare costs $2.50 for adults. Plan on spending $1,400 a month to rent a one-bedroom residence. A beer at a bar costs $9.50, but hit happy hour or a dive bar and pay half that price. Gas ranks 18 percent higher than the national average. Living in Hawaii is worth every penny for those who desire a warm, sunny climate year-round.

Shopping

Ewa Beach houses two main shopping centers that act as one-stop wonders: Ewa Town Center and Laulani Village. Video stores, fast food joints, nail salons drugstores and more service all of your needs at both locations.

When looking to shop at a boutique, head to Chateau Je T'aime for affordable women's clothing and accessories. Purchase bangle bracelets and a studded clutch to spice up your outfit. The owner helps customers pick out the best outfits for their styles and body types.

The locally owned Mad Monogram boutique sells custom-made children's clothing and other items upon request. Call ahead and speak to the owner about what you desire and she'll whip something together.

Locals prefer to shop at Mahiku Farmers' Market to support local vendors and purchase fresh produce. Many vendors set up shop at this versatile market. Buk Buk Kitchen sells Filipino and local foods. Purchase delectable baked goods at Manny's Bake Shop. For more of a supermarket-style experience, head to Safeway, Foodland, or Silva's Grocery and Liquor, all located right in Ewa Beach.

Parks

People live in Hawaii because they want to be outside and in the sunshine. Several parks provide outdoor recreation. Geiger Park houses basketball courts, a baseball field and a playground area. A few shaded areas surround the park for those looking to beat the heat and enjoy a picnic. This kid- and dog-friendly location promotes family fun.

Locals spend time in the sand at Ewa Beach Park, where the palm trees and clear blue waters attract those who want to bask in the sun. A huge open field sits next to the beach, which allows kids and adults to play ball or go for a jog. Kids also spend time on the playground after taking a dip in the water. Fisherman love the area as well. Attend the annual Bash at the Bush festival to celebrate the community with food, entertainment and recreational fun.
