With a population just under 19,000 residents, the town of Elko, Nevada, is a true desert town out in the big northeastern part of Nevada. It sits on Interstate 80, with much of its industry focused around traffic that rides on the Interstate and uses Elko as a pit stop on long trips between the Midwest and California. This is a critical point, because there is literally no other development in any direction for at least 130 miles. Major cities are further out being at least 230 miles. No surprise, the town is nicknamed the “Heart of Northeast Nevada.”
Cultural Activities in Elko, NV
The town has its own share of culture which has been going on for years. No surprise, its desert and ranching oriented, with a flavor for the big west. The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering has been attracting residents for almost 30 years. Ironically, Elko has a yearly National Basque Festival, celebrating the culture of a Northern Spain culture since 1963. The annual festival reinforces the Basque ties Elko families have with Spanish Europe. With a more modern flavor, summer sees the Rumble in the Rubies Motorcycle Rally in Elko in June.
Elko can also claim being the home of the Western Folklife Center. This museum was established and operates as a local center to capture and archive as well as share and display the traditional of the American West. The museum is easy to find being located in the main core of town.
Nightlife in Elko, NV
Like much of Nevada, Elko has its share of casinos as well, which help add to the local economy and income base. Six different casinos are established in town, most visible as traffic moves along Interstate 80 through town.
Nightlife in Elko is pretty much the bars in town or the casino. And yes, because it is a smaller jurisdiction, Elko has legal brothels in town as well. No surprise, Elko can see a lot of traffic from the Wendover and Hill Air Force Bases to the East on leave days.
