Commerce sits about 65 miles northeast of Dallas, straddling the line between North Texas and the eastern part of the state, where open Blackland Prairie gives the landscape a wide, unhurried feel. The city is defined in large part by East Texas A&M University, a four-year institution founded in 1894 that enrolls more than 12,000 students. Commerce earned the distinction of being named the Bois d'Arc Capital of Texas, and each fall the city hosts the Bois d'Arc Bash, a community celebration featuring live music, barbecue cook-offs, a parade, and local vendors.
