Chicago’s Near North Side has earned a reputation as one of the most desirable communities in the city for renters. Residents generally recognize the Near North Side as the area below North Avenue between Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. This large waterfront section of the city incorporates several smaller neighborhoods, including River North, Old Town, and Gold Coast. You’ll find the area’s most popular attractions along the famous Michigan Avenue (AKA “The Magnificent Mile”), a swanky shopping corridor that also incorporates high-end restaurants, trendy nightclubs, and performance venues.
So, what is it like to live in Near North Side? The magnificent Victorian architecture intermingles with the modern skyscrapers, creating a distinctive and timeless atmosphere. This section of the city is also home to a vast array of art galleries, displaying everything from the classical to the contemporary.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Property Ratings at Chestnut Place
I've been in this building for a little over a year and have moved from an older apartment into one of their newly renovated units. The new apartments have very nice finishes and are fairly affordable given the awesome downtown location. My apartment is big, great closet space and I have a view of the lake and downtown chicago. The maintenance people are always very quick and responsive, I would recommend this place highly,
I have been living at Chestnut Place for over four years now, and recently moved from a "classic" unit to one of the renovated units. To begin, the location of this building is unbeatable. Being two blocks from the Mag Mile, a five minute walk from Oak Street Beach and a two minute walk from the red line train is amazing! I can literally walk to anywhere I need to go -- there are six grocery stores within a half a mile (Potash Brothers, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Treasure Island, two Jewels) as well as plenty of shopping and dining options, not to mention like five Starbucks within a two block radius. Apart from the location, the building itself for the most part has been great. About a year and a half ago, the building came under new management which has brought about a number of changes. The new management company, Golub, has been working on slowly renovating the building unit by unit as people move out. The unit that I lived in for four years was definitely "retro"... it has wall to wall carpet and appliances from 1982 (literally!). The unit I recently moved into (as well as all the newly updated units) are gorgeous -- dark wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances, marble counter tops, and really nice distressed greyish laminate wood floors. I see this as a HUGE upgrade from what the older units look like. I know they also have big plans for renovated the lobby and communal areas to be completed over the next year. The building as a big laundry room, a shared outdoor patio with two grills, and an adequate gym. The building is also dog friendly as of about year ago (!!). The door staff and maintenance team (old faces and new) are all awesome. There are a couple of things that residents are not super thrilled about. There is a parking garage attached to the building, and when Golub took over they sold the garage to Standard Parking. As a result, monthly parking rates went up a LOT -- $170.00 per month to $245.00 per month ($330.00 if you want a reserved spot). They also dedicated a bunch of spots on the first and second level to Enterprise Rent-a-Car, so residents typically have to park on the third or fourth floor which is a pain. Also, storage units used to be included in the rent and now cost an additional $20.00 a month :(. Overall, I would say good outweighs the bad! Amazing location and reasonable rent for the area.
