The only town in South Florida with just two businesses, Highland Beach is an oceanfront retreat in Palm Beach County where quiet is a way of life. Situated 50 miles north of Miami and 28 miles south of Palm Beach, this one-square-mile town sits between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Intracoastal Waterway to the west, giving residents water views in nearly every direction. For dining, shopping, and nightlife, residents head to neighboring Delray Beach just a few miles north or Boca Raton a few miles to the south.
The population more than doubles each winter as seasonal residents arrive, a rhythm that defines the town's character. Florida Atlantic University is less than five miles away, and the town was incorporated in 1949, taking its name from its relatively elevated position along the coast.
