Daily life revolves around a walkable downtown, tree-lined residential streets, and easy access to dining and retail along Contra Costa Boulevard and Oak Park Boulevard. The Diablo Mountain Range is visible from many corners of the city, and popular spots like Downtown Pleasant Hill give residents plenty to explore without going far.
The rental market offers garden-style apartment communities along its eastern edge. Most of the rental stock was built between 1940 and 1999, giving the city a classic suburban character with mature landscaping and established streetscapes.
Diablo Valley College has anchored the community for more than 75 years, serving as both an educational and cultural hub. The city incorporated in 1961 and has grown steadily since. Actor Tom Hanks grew up here -- a big cultural note for a smaller-sized city.
