An elegant mansion with balconies, pillars, and a red roof stands at the heart of the Belle Meade neighborhood. The Belle Meade mansion was built in 1807 by John Harding, a horse breeder who became world-famous for his thoroughbreds. Today, 30 acres of the original plantation, including the mansion and several outbuildings, operate as a museum. The plantation is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The beauty and history of the plantation permeates the surrounding neighborhood, and Belle Meade is one of Nashville's most desirable neighborhoods. In addition to the historic plantation, this is also the location of the prestigious Belle Meade Country Club. Famous Belle Meade residents include Amy Grant, former Vice President Al Gore, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham.
