Biloxi’s long history as a Gulf Coast resort community has earned it the nickname “The Playground of the South,” and you’ll find that that nickname is still quite accurate. In addition to the sugar-white beaches, the local gaming industry attracts folks from all across the South, and locals get to take advantage of the stellar entertainment lineups at the numerous casinos in town. Seafood lovers will be in heaven, as the local shrimping and fishing industries deliver fresh catches daily to dozens of Biloxi restaurants. The city offers direct access to beautiful white sand beaches, and it’s not hard to find surprisingly affordable condos overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. As home to Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi supports a large population of armed service personnel and civilian military employees, and it’s quite common to spot C-130 variants in the air from time to time.

Restaurants

The Biloxi area is known for its wide array of outstanding seafood restaurants. The area is also popular for its casinos, many of which have their own high end eating spots. The Half Shell Oyster House is renowned throughout the entire state. It's located downtown, as are many of the best restaurants. Renters who want to take advantage of this location should just keep in mind that you'll be paying for the right to set up in close proximity to these options. The Ocean Springs community most likely has the widest array of different styles of food. There's still seafood available, but for those looking for classic American, Chinese, Italian or casual dining may want to search for an apartment in this area. One additional highlight is the restaurants that feature Cajun dining. This isn't New Orleans, but restaurants like The Kajun Kitchen in Waveland and Switzer Patsy in Ocean Springs are still worth checking out.

Shopping

The Biloxi-Gulfport area has some of the best shopping in the entire state. You won't be too far from some great retailers regardless of which neighborhood you decide to settle down in. Located off of Interstate 70, the Gulfport Premium Outlets are widely considered to be the best choice for name brand shopping in the area. American Eagle Outfitters, Banana Republic, Nike, J. Crew, Disney, Ralph Lauren, Coach and Tommy Hilfiger are just some of the stores available. If you are setting up closer to downtown, Biloxi's Main Street has been the benefit of a recent revitalization project that has seen a number of local shops open. Some features the work of local artists and craftsmen. Biloxi's Edgewater Mall offers an indoor shopping experience that fills in a more affordable price range than the Premium Outlets. You'll find a number of great choices for families here, including apparel and accessories.
