Our last review: This is a magical place. Beauty, peace and tranquility are the routine. There is birdsong and the music of the breeze whispering through the towering stands of cottonwoods. For sunrise and sunset, the two-minute walk to the top of the rise behind the house has views to thrill the heart. This is a poet or painter's paradise. I'm neither, but my month-long stay on the ranch is pushing me to be one... or the other... or both. In the meantime, it's been a great place to relax, to soak-in some spaciousness to my heart and mind, and to get some good hikes in. A 30-minute walk through the meadows and pastures south of the house was a great way to start or end the day, but there are also some great, strolling hikes in the various units of the Cherokee Park Wildlife Refuge located 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes drive into the hills. The apartment itself is like a firm embrace. It's cozy and comfortable and solid. Really solid. Grounding. Bright and sunny where you want it, cool and dark where you need it. All the amenities are there: fully-stocked kitchen, great shower, washer and dryer, plenty of space for yoga or stretching if you're into that kinda thing, and plenty of different places to sit, inside and out. Even when hot outside (90's hot), inside, the apartment was always cool. Easy to keep the place warm too, and for added ambiance, the wood-burning fireplace was wonderful. I'm sure the charm of the place is suggested in the photos, but the reality was more charming still. Carl and Sarah were welcoming and as helpful as could be. If I wanted privacy, it was never a problem. Their farm house is more than 50 meters away with intervening gardens, shrubbery and buildings. I went days without seeing anyone if I didn't want to. But they were also very open to conversation and interaction, and both are most warm and excellent in that department. The heart of Fort Collins is only a 30-minute drive down Hwy 287, and a beautiful drive at that, but the ranch feels so extraordinarily removed by both time and distance, like waking from a dream set in an Western movie and discovering it's just real. The Forks, just a few minutes away, has a good restaurant, and a shop with some essentials including beer and wine. Final assessment: If you have the chance to stay, don't hesitate, just do. It'll be a miracle in your life.
