About This Property

The 5 story Victorian brick building at 820 Liberty Avenue was constructed in 1881 by James J Porter, founder of the Porter & Donaldson Millinery Company, founded in Steubenville Ohio in 1867. In 1907, George Schroeder moved in with the Schroeder Piano Company, a regional manufacturer of upright and player pianos. This business occupied the building until the Great Depression and thereafter was the home of Place Credit Clothing Company. These were the days before credit cards, when the mark of a gentleman was how much he owed his tailor. Their slogan was: “Clothes that Please on Terms of Ease”. Blum Furniture was housed in the building followed by a variety of retail businesses until the turn of the century.
