Astoria, OR Apartments for Rent
Located along the mouth of the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean, Astoria is a port city with a walkable, vibrant downtown, historic architecture, amazing views, and great destinations. One of those destinations predates the city itself -- Fort Astoria. The fort was established in 1811 as a fur trading post for John Astor's Pacific Fur Company. Today, a reconstructed block house and historical markers occupy the space of the former fort in Downtown Astoria at the corner of Exchange and 15th Streets.
One of Oregon's most-visited sites is located in Astoria -- the Astoria Column. Standing 600 feet above sea level, the views from the top of the column are amazing. The column itself is equally impressive, completely covered in murals celebrating historic events. The murals were done by artist Attilio Pusterla in 1926. Other terrific destinations include the Columbia River Maritime Museum, The Captain George Flavel House Museum (an impressive Victorian mansion built in 1885 and featured in the movie The Goonies), and the Oregon Film Museum (housed in the historic Old Clatsop County Jail, built in 1913).
In Downtown Astoria, stroll down the Astoria Riverwalk and be sure to stop at Pier 39. The city's largest and oldest waterfront building contains some great locations, including the Rogue Ale Public House and Coffee Girl. Or just enjoy the sea lions or watch the ships. Head to the Buoy Beer Company, a microbrewery and brewpub located in a former cannery. Fort George Brewery is another great brewpub, located in a remodeled warehouse. For great seafood, head to Silver Salmon Grille or Clemente's Seafood.
