Nelsonville is known as the star of the Hocking Hills region because of its rich history. The small town was once famous in the coal, clay, salt, and brick-making industries. Home of the Star Brick, Nelsonville was an epicenter for brick making during the Industrial Revolution. The town gained worldwide recognition when the Nelsonville Block brand won first prize at the World’s Fair in 1904. You can even see the last of the remaining brick kilns at Nelsonville Brick Park.
Now, Nelsonville is known for interesting attractions. Hop aboard the Hocking Valley Railway for a scenic ride on a portion of the railroad line that once transported salt, coal, and brick out of the town. The railway is a popular spot and does themed rides throughout the year. Residents also spend their time enjoying Nelsonville’s gorgeous natural areas. Rent a kayak at Murray’s Landing and paddle down the Hocking River or bike down the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, a 21-mile ride with inspiring scenery.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
