The small city of Hermiston is a fairly isolated community in northeast Oregon, located at the junction of interstate 82 and 84 just a few miles south of the Columbia River. Though the city itself is home to less than 20,000 people, Hermiston is the largest city in Eastern Oregon, making it a major economic and cultural hub for the region, and thousands of people from the surrounding areas commute. Agriculture has historically been a major industry in Hermiston, and the area’s huge watermelon crops inspired the city’s motto, “Where Life is Sweet.” Folks in Hermiston enjoy easy access to Washington’s Tri-Cities area, which lies only about thirty miles up the road.
