Located along the mouth of the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean, Astoria is a port city with a walkable, vibrant downtown, historic architecture, amazing views, and great destinations. One of those destinations predates the city itself -- Fort Astoria. The fort was established in 1811 as a fur trading post for John Astor's Pacific Fur Company. Today, a reconstructed block house and historical markers occupy the space of the former fort in Downtown Astoria at the corner of Exchange and 15th Streets.
One of Oregon's most-visited sites is located in Astoria -- the Astoria Column. Standing 600 feet above sea level, the views from the top of the column are amazing. The column itself is equally impressive, completely covered in murals celebrating historic events. The murals were done by artist Attilio Pusterla in 1926.
