The heavy masonry construction method used to build Italianate/Ascetic style Crane Mansion was cutting edge at the time. The mansion features elaborate woodwork made from quarter sawn white oak, Birdseye maple and Honduran mahogany. The front entry and main floor porches feature poured terrazzo floors. Six fireplaces provided supplemental heating. F. I. Crane owned the largest lumber yard in the area and was also the mayor of Austin for many years. Mr. Crane and his wife were visionaries who played a large role in the financial expansion and cultural growth of Austin at the turn of the last century. After years of lavish entertaining family gathering, the mansion was professionally converted into 7 apartments in 1930. The new owners of Crane Mansion are steadily moving forward with the restoration of this fine structure.
