Neighborhood

Originally designed as a community for factory workers, Mechanicsville developed around 1860 and is one of Knoxville’s oldest neighborhoods. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this charming community contains a variety of shotgun and Victorian style homes. Since it was populated by the skilled workers often referred to as “Mechanics” at the time, the neighborhood was named “Mechanicsville.”

Mechanicsville is home to Knoxville College, which was founded in 1875 and is recognized as an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). The 17-building campus is also a registered historic landmark. The oldest building on campus, McKee Hall, was built in 1876. Other notable locations in Mechanicsville include Malcolm Martin Park, which contains a public swimming pool and the Malcom Martin Greenway, Beardsley Community Farm, and the Wesley House Community Center.
