After the American Revolution, the untamed wilderness of Onondaga County was designated a Military Tract, where land was donated to war veterans. John McHarrie and his wife Lydia were two of the first permanent settlers, arriving in 1794. They helped those traveling the Seneca River, and one of those travelers, Dr. Jonas Baldwin, arrived in 1798. Dr. Baldwin constructed a dam and a canal to harness the river's energy, and he built a bridge to establish the settlement as a river crossing. Eventually, the settlement was named for him. Today, the Village of Baldwinsville retains much of its historical atmosphere, with several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
