There are also magnolias crepe myrtle bamboo fig trees two orange trees a Meyer lemon tree and vines of honeysuckle jasmine and bougainvillea and a butterfly garden all shaded by giant live oaks hung with Spanish moss. There is a rustic screened gazebo in a shady breezy area of the garden. It is a pleasant bike ride to the beautiful wildlife sanctuary of Lake Woodruff or the famed DeLeon Springs state park along the paved bicycle path or a short drive. Amtrak trains stopping at the historical town station can take one to Orlando Tampa and Miami or as far north as New York and Boston. Airports serving the area are located in Orlando Sanford and Daytona Beach. Public tennis courts are just south of the downtown and private courts for a day fee are five minutes away. Close by are also boat rentals and fishing and river access. Downtown Deland with its many restaurants museums antiques and the beautiful Stetson University campus is a short drive as are major supermarkets. Visit Disney World the scenic Mt. Dora New Smyrna Beach 25 miles away rent a boat and spend a day on the St. Johns River drive to nearby Hontoon Landing take the ferry to the island and hike the trail to the shellmound or rent kayaks or canoes. The swimming pool is solar heated and retains comfortable temperatures even in summer and the nearby DeLeon Springs or Blue Springs to the south offer refreshing 72-degree spring fed water for swimming as well.
