In 1785, Joel Lane (known as the "Father of Raleigh") built a grand plantation home for his son, Henry. The 5,000-acre plantation was one of Wake County's largest. Henry left the plantation to his daughter, Margaret, who was married to Moses Mordecai. The Mordecai House is the oldest home in Raleigh still at its original location, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood surrounding this historic plantation home is known as the Mordecai Place Historic District. Mordecai features more than 180 historic homes, most built around 1900 and including craftsman, bungalow, and colonial revival styles.
Mordecai is a downtown neighborhood with a Citizens Advisory Committee. In addition to the historic park (which, along with the plantation home, also contains the birthplace of President Andrew Jackson), Mordecai Mini Park, a terrific neighborhood park with a playground.
