Situated halfway between Lansing and Detroit with about an hour’s drive to both, Highland is a terrific town with a pastoral landscape. If you enjoy horse farms and spending time outdoors on the lake or at a park, Highland is ideal. Much of Highland consists of parkland and open green space, and parks encircle the town on all sides. To the north, Rose Oaks County Park is terrific for horseback riding, hiking, and canoeing. On the east side, Alpine Valley is popular for skiing and snowboarding, while Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area provides a campground, a beach, and a fishing pier. Highland State Recreation Area was once the 2,422-acre vacation estate of Edsel and Eleanor Ford. When Edsel died in 1943, Eleanor sold the estate to the park system.
Highland was founded in 1835 and the town quickly became known for pickles and lumber. Today, this cozy community is terrific for those who want a country feel within the Detroit metro area.
