Situated along the Rio Grande with fantastic views of the Sandia Mountains, the history of this little community dates back to 1695, when it was founded by Don Diego de Vargas. Even the town's festivals have a long history -- the Las fiestas De San Lorenzo, held every year in August, has been taking place for more than 300 years.
Bernalillo is near some fascinating destinations. The Coronado Historic Site on Bernalillo's west side preserves the ruins of the Kuaua Pueblo, dating to about 1325. Visitors can walk the interpretive trail, which leads through the ruins to a reconstructed kiva. Several kiva murals were discovered during an archeological dig in the 1930s; these murals are considered some of the best Pre-Columbian art ever discovered in North America.
