Located on the Rio Grande along US-Mexico border, Eagle Pass has two international bridges to its sister city of Piedras Negras in Coahuila, Mexico. As the first American settlement on the Rio Grande, Eagle Pass was originally an outpost for the Texas militia during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The Fort Duncan Museum, dating back to 1849 when the fort was established during the Texas revolution, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Seven of the fort's original buildings are still standing, and the former Commander's Headquarters serves as the museum.
Eagle Pass is home to the Lucky Eagle Casino, operated by the Kickapoo Tribe. The city also features a municipal golf course, a terrific downtown shopping and dining district, and the Mall de las Aquilas. Across International Bridge I, residents can enjoy the Zaragoza Mercado or walk along the Plazita near the Santuario de Guadalupe, a historic church built in 1859.
