    Columbus and the surrounding region offer a number of great neighborhoods featuring wide sidewalks, tree-lined streets and lavish Antebellum homes that show off the region's rich history. The historical district in particular is a popular choice for many apartment seekers. You can't go very far without seeing a national landmark that was first built back during the days of the Old South.

    If you are looking for a diverse neighborhood, Columbus's "Catfish Alley" along College Street and Main Street is home to a robust African-American community that is proud of its heritage in the region. Residents used to hawk catfish and vegetables on the city streets here.

    Weather in Columbus, MS

    Columbus weather is similar to that of other cities in the Deep South. Average highs even in winter are still above 50 degrees. The summer always brings a sweltering heat wave, with the mercury reaching upwards of 90 to 100 degrees almost every day. Columbus gets an average of about 55 inches of rain a year. The wettest months tend to be in the spring time, with March and April racking up the most water.

    The area is sometimes prone to inclement weather such as tornadoes. Columbus is unique in that its geography is much flatter than many of the other surrounding towns and as such, tornadoes tend to have more space to roam unhindered across the open fields. It doesn't happen often, but those renting an apartment in the area should probably consider picking up some renter's insurance. Tornadoes tend to happen most often during thunderstorms that occur during the hot and humid summer months.

    Cultural Attractions in Columbus, MS

    There are people who come from all over the state to see Columbus's many different cultural attractions. Columbus was the first home of notable writer Tennessee Williams. The Tennessee Williams Welcome Center attracts visitors from all over the country every year.

    The Columbus Historic Foundation holds tours allowing visitors and Columbus residents alike to view many of the authentic historical homes in the Columbus region. The Columbus Arts Council holds regular events including many different Broadway and local stage shows. The historical district downtown offers plenty of specialty shops including several art galleries.

    Sports in Columbus, MS

    There is plenty to do when it comes to recreation in the Columbus area. The Columbus Marina is a popular choice for local boat owners and fishing is also available. There are also a number of boat tour companies in the area that can take guests out onto the river for a lazy and fun afternoon. The Columbus-Lowndes Recreation Authority is the body that organizes many of the youth sports and intramural activities in the region.

    Columbus is also home to several golf courses. The Elm Lake Golf Course is a public course. There are several other courses that are clubs which require membership. These include the Columbus Country Club off of Highway 12, the Green Oaks Golf Club and the Whispering Pines Golf Club. The golf courses tend to stay open year round as temperatures even in the winter stay tolerable enough to make it out onto the course. 

    When it comes to spectator sports, there are a number of race car speedways in Columbus and surrounding regions. The Columbus Speedway holds regular events featuring drag racing and other styles of cars. The area is also known for its bass fishing along the nearby river.

    Any mention of sports in Columbus would be remiss if it didn't bring up nearby Mississippi State University. MSU is located in nearby Starkville, one of the other cities in the region's "Golden Triangle." Many Columbus residents make the short drive to Starkville for various MSU games. College football in particular is very popular. It's not uncommon for the entire area to descend upon Starkville for a weekend long party before every MSU home game.
