Finding Apartments for Rent in East Lansing, MI
Looking to rent an apartment in East Lansing, Michigan? Well, you're in luck because there are a plethora of options. So much so that the hardest decision is narrowing down your list of possibilities. That's because East Lansing is a college town, the host city to Michigan State University of the Big Ten Conference. And while some 40,000-plus students attend the university - thereby residing within East Lansing's city limits - a big fraction of the student body venture off campus for their housing. And much of this housing is apartment rentals.
Top Neighborhoods in East Lansing, MI
Since East Lansing is such a small municipality, there are no true "neighborhoods." Location is more so dictated by directions related to campus. East campus tends to be more of a rowdy and party area of campus, while west, north and south tend to be more quiet and subdued areas to live. In fact, East Lansing High School is located just a few miles north of campus, so many families and young professionals live in the homes and apartments in that area.
Downtown East Lansing, however, might be the most prestigious place to live, as it's close to the area's nightlife and entertainment scene and within walking distance to other popular venues like Spartan Stadium, Breslin Center and Munn Ice Arena. However, apartment rentals in downtown East Lansing also tend to be more expensive in nature, based on their location, compared to rentals in other areas of the city.
Sports in East Lansing, MI
If you're a sports fan, you've come to the right place. As we mentioned previously, East Lansing is the host city to Michigan State University, a Division I college and member of the Big Ten Conference. Fall Saturdays are usually rocking on campus, as over 100,000 people tailgate in and around East Lansing before 75,000 head into central campus to Spartan Stadium to watch the MSU football team take to the field. And the football team is nothing to sneeze at either - the Spartans are coming off a 13-1 season, Big Ten Championship and Rose Bowl win in 2013.
While football is king, Michigan State also offers successful basketball, baseball and hockey teams, as well as a slew of other smaller non-revenue sports. And if you want to get a taste of some professional sports, just head east down Michigan Avenue a few miles, where you'll find the home ballpark of the Single-A Lansing Lugnuts.
Nightlife in East Lansing, MI
East Lansing is a college town, so it shouldn't surprise you that there's plenty to do in the way of nightlife. If you're 21 and over, and don't mind the company of college students, Rick's, the Riv, PT O'Malley's, Harper's and The Landshark are all local downtown East Lansing venues where you can grab a drink, meet up with friends, make new friends and dance the night away. For a great atmosphere, but more of a non-student crowd, try Crunchy's, Dublin Square or Reno's.
If you're not into the bar or club scene, but just want to kick back and relax somewhere, we'd recommend Pinball Pete's, a downtown East Lansing arcade and gaming center. Just west of campus, the Whiskey Barrel Saloon offers line dancing, a mechanical bull and plenty of seating to comfortably sit back and enjoy country music. And, of course, there's always Buffalo Wild Wings for the sports fan.
Transportation Options in East Lansing, MI
At only 13.67 square miles, East Lansing is a small city, making walking or biking the preferred and most feasible types of transportation for many. However, there is public transportation available, both for getting around campus and into other areas of the city via the CATA (Capital Area Transportation Authority) bus system for those who don't wish to bike, drive or walk. A main CATA station is located in central campus and buses also go into all parts of the city to make transportation a breeze for students and residents. Many apartment units will even provide complimentary CATA bus passes to tenants as an added value offering.
Generally speaking, however, walking or biking is just fine for getting around East Lansing, especially in the fall, summer and spring when campus is vibrant and active.View Apartments in East Lansing, Michigan
