The Old Globe Theatre was built in 1935 in order to present abridged versions of William Shakespeare’s plays during the California Pacific International Exposition. The San Diego Community Theatre, a nonprofit organization, leased the theatre and adjacent buildings from the city of San Diego. The organization renovated the theatre, bringing it up to the building code for permanent structures. The organization continues to lease the theatre complex from the city. Plays have been presented in the theatre from 1937 to the present day.
