  • Restaurants

Yonkers runs the gamut when it comes to eat out. This is New York so every neighborhood has its own favorite pizza place where you can order a slice or a whole pie. Central Avenue, Yonkers north-south main drag has everything you feel like on any night of the week - Chinese, Italian, Japanese, even a Nathan's Famous hot dog. Special occasions, however, call for a trip over to the Downtown Waterfront District where upscale restaurants mark the city's success in refurbishing the area. The star of the area is Chef Peter X. Kelly's Xaviars X20. This glass three story glass block of a building is on the Hudson River, built at the end of an old pier.

If you love the thrill of Las Vegas you can get your fix at Yonkers' own Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway.Venture onto the massive casino floor and be instantly mesmerized by the digital dings and flashing lights emanating from the 5,300 hot slot machines. And like Vegas, you can fill up on lavishly presented food in the restaurants upstairs and catch a show or concert. If you prefer the ponies, you can go outside and place your bets. Yonkers Raceway, originally known as Empire City Track when it was built back in 1899, has harness racing under the lights five nights a week

  • Shopping

When it comes to shopping, if you can't find it in Yonkers, you can't find it anywhere. Cross County Shopping Center in the southern portion of the city, accessible by city bus and all highways, has been a shopping mecca since the 1950's. A refreshing alternative to enclosed shopping malls, Cross County offers over one hundred shops, a variety of restaurants, a movie complex, even a gym, all situated along landscaped paths connecting the two anchor stores, Macy's and Sears at either end. Lucky for you, it's in an area of stately brick buildings with apartments for rent. At the other end of the scale, on the city's northern border, there's the new Ridge Hill Complex with upscale pricey establishments ranging from fashion boutiques to sports outfitters, even an Apple Store, and a Whole Foods. It's a place where you can easily find yourself spending the whole day, especially if you eat in one of its many gourmet restaurants then catch a movie at the multiplex.
