Restaurants

Look for the best Woodlands of Camino Real restaurants along Bitters Road and Blanco Road, two of the neighborhood's main streets, where you'll find good eats any day of the week.

When you're fast and furious for food, Bitters Road has you covered. Pho Cong Ly and Taste of Asia - two quick-serve restaurants in one - provide you with the widest assortment of Asian food choices in the area. Sit on the Taste of Asia side for scrumptious fried spring rolls, or choose the Pho Cong Ly dining room for pho with all the fixings and a sprinkling of chili oil on top.

Expect your food to come out on real plates at Los Roberto's Taco Shop on Bitters Road. Although it presents a fast food-like atmosphere, this San Antonio small chain institution prepares an amazing selection of Mexican restaurant-quality dishes. Try the Salchicha sausage or A La Mexicana breakfast burritos. For lunch or dinner, go for the carne asada tacos, fries or burrito.

El Mirasol, located on Blanco Road, provides you with a posh, contemporary atmosphere to enjoy the region's most beloved cuisine. Special touches such as house-roasted salsa, stained glass window panels, elegant plate styling and flower-topped tables encourage you to linger over your dinner with a special person in your life. El Mira Sol menu stars include tacos de puerco, chile poblano en nogada and fajitas.

Nearby Embassy Road houses 502 Bar, one of the best places to see live bands in the area. Meticulous sound engineering, the best local and traveling bands and a dark, cozy atmosphere make this spot a must-see.

When you just want to have a drink and chill, head to Hidden Tavern on West Avenue. This friendly dive welcomes one and all with cheap drink specials, karaoke and DJ-driven dance nights.

History

Once included as part of an expansive 19th-century farming community, the Woodlands at Camino Real neighborhood flourishes as a collective unit of contemporary subdivisions that are strategically located near the area's main traffic arteries.

Enjoy the highly entertaining trivia and relics found at the Texas Transportation Museum along Wetmore Road. Providing a comprehensive review of the area's transit evolution, the museum also hosts numerous yearly events, including a Christmas train ride and an all-ages Halloween festival.

The JCC Jewish Film Festival on nearby Embassy Row satisfies your craving for global culture. Each year, the producers pride themselves on bringing intellectually stimulating independent films to San Antonio residents.

Transportation

With direct access to Interstate Loop 410, U.S. Route 281 and Texas State Highway Loop 1064, Woodlands of Camino Real's location to the outlying area can't be beat. While driving your own car around the area maximizes your available work or leisure time, taking the bus from one of the VIA Metropolitan Transit stops on San Pedro Avenue is quick and easy. Luckily, free parking is relatively easy to find.

Don't expect cabs to be easy to hail in this neighborhood. Instead, use your Uber app or call a cab company ahead of time to ensure that you won't be stranded.

Most businesses operate outside of walking distance from residential areas, but the city's incorporation of bike lanes along Blanco Road, Wurzbach Parkway and West Hausman Road make biking a reasonable alternative to vehicles.

Cost

Woodlands of Camino Real's hefty average rent of $990 for a one-bedroom residence indicates a significantly higher cost of living than the surrounding areas. As a resident, you absorb some of the costs for living through the lower costs of other necessities.

For example, gas prices here usually level out at 23 percent below the national average, and taking the bus only costs about $1.50 per ride. Grabbing a beer after work runs you roughly $5 to $7.50.

Shopping

The Woodlands of Camino Real neighborhood has an assortment of niche stores, or you can shop at all the major chain stores at the North Star Mall on San Pedro Avenue.

When looking for just the right gift for the comic book lover in your life, head to Alien Worlds, also located along San Pedro Avenue. Featuring a wide variety of new age and back-order comics, this shop also keeps a fresh supply of comic book novelty items on hand.

On NW Loop 410, Clothes Mentor offers gently used women's clothing, shoes and accessories. Clean, fresh-smelling clothing and this store's employees dedication to keeping all of the items meticulously organized separates this second-hand boutique from the rest of its kind in the area.

Grab groceries on the way home from work at the Walmart on Jones Maltsberger Road or the H-E-B on West Avenue in the Castle Hills neighborhood.

Parks

A former dairy farm, the 300-acre Phil Hardberger Park on Blanco Road encourages all-ages outdoor exercise. The massive children's play area features a circuit fitness course, while the park's numerous hiking/biking trails lure adults to work out along winding, picturesque paths.

The free community park welcomes on-leash dogs anywhere on the facility's grounds. Take your pooch to meet new friends and run wild in either the small or large dog park areas.

Phil Hardberger Park hosts a wide variety of family-friendly educational events throughout the year at the on-site Urban Ecology Center. The site also functions as a for-fee special occasion event space.
