The Weedon Island Preserve community resides on Weedon Island, an area with a history dating back to 5000 B.C.. During this time, early humans inhabited the island, living off of fish, plants and wetland mammals. Referred to as the early Weedon Island Culture, these inhabitants remained in the area for over 800 years.

In 1886, Captain W.B. Henderson purchased the island. When Henderson's daughter Blanche married Leslie Weedon, he gave them the island as a wedding gift. In 1923, Weedon sold most of the island to land developers. Homes, bridges, businesses and the Grand Central Airport were constructed, and the island continues to thrive today.

The Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center features artwork of local artists along with a digital exhibit of Weedon Island Culture artifacts. The center also hosts the annual Archeology Works Expo every first Saturday in March.


The streets and sidewalks within the Weedon Island Preserve community make for safe walking and biking, and the nearby state preserve features several nature trails. Additionally, cyclists have access to 35 miles of biking trails and 75 miles of on-street biking lanes throughout the city of St. Petersburg.

Drivers can park on the residential streets for free, but it's imperative to only park within the time limits specified on the residential parking enforcement signs to avoid parking tickets and potential fines. In areas with heavier traffic such as downtown Petersburg, drivers can also utilize standard parking meters wherever available.

Commuters can access the Interstate 275 Freeway via Gandy Boulevard North as well as catch Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) buses at various stop locations throughout the city, including 1st Street Northeast and 9th Avenue North.
