New management, new living.

I lived at the Standard for the last year (left recently because I only planned to be in the area for a year) and had a chance to see the old management that the previous reviews mention and the new management that came in. And the commentary on the old manager was justified. The new manager though, Linda, made immediate changes to improve the lives of residents as soon as she took the job. I noticed more cleaning, fresher hallways, better care for community tools, common areas and safety. One of her first acts was repainting the entryway and replacing the main door with a new, more secure one and she's only been there a few months. Basically, she's actually taking care of the property and the residents. You can tell she loves her job, working with people and keeping things orderly. Always looks professional, keeps set times and schedules, and is willing to help you with whatever she can. The owners made the right decision hiring her. As for the rest of my experience, the residents are nice, some are more social than others. Many seem to never pick up their packages, but on the plus side it means they're also not getting stolen. Walls were thick, at least for me, and I basically never heard my neighbors unless I was in the common hallways. Apartments are in good shape, as they should be given the age of the property. Great insulation! I had a whole wall of windows in my apartment and still only turned the heat on like twice during the winter. In short, it's a nice place, on the rise and have a feeling it's only going to continue getting better with the new manager there.

Ask to see the pet station

Even if you don’t have a pet, ask to see the pet station. The area around the pet station will give you an idea of both the type of neighbors and property management you’ll be renting with.

9/15/20
You can do better than this!

The thin walls and floors are perfect for letting you know what your neighbors are doing at all hours. The fixtures and finishes are of the poorest quality. Inadequate cabinetry and low-grade appliances render the kitchen frustrating for actual cookery. The current on-site manager is just the latest in a string of petty and unprofessional individuals (IMHO) who clearly view tenants as underlings rather than as valued customers. On the upside, the building is reasonably secure, and they have a good maintenance man. But together with a shockingly inadequate response to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s no great mystery why 35 of the 99 units are vacant as of October 2020. And we’ll be joining that exodus when our current lease expires next June.

10/31/19
Nice location - terrible management

We stayed at the Standard for 15 months -the rooms are pretty decent and building fairly new and it's a great location. The on-site staff is good especially maintenance, but the office hours are spotty. Lots of front office turn-over. The issue is the disconnect between renters/on-site staff and the management group which is typical aloof, nickel and dimers. I had a medical condition and they were supposed to put in a safety bar in the shower but gave me the run-around. We extended our lease and then ended up buying a condo - happy to pay the rent per the lease but the parking and storage were not part of the original lease - they rolled it into the extension and forced us to pay for an empty parking spot and storage unit which again were originally optional add-ons - no flexibility, dialogue, compassion or common sense - just by-the-book invisible management company counting its pennies. They are probably all the same but wouldn't recommend The Standard at the high rents given poor management. Another tip - if you do rent do not take a room near Vittucci's across the street - it's very loud late night in the summer!

5/4/18
Great location, so-so everything else

Location is the thing here. It's near bus routes, there decent eateries and Whole Foods in walking distance, and the library is literally right downstairs. Fixtures, finishes, and cabinetry are low-quality given the rent. Particleboard, plastic laminates, and sheet vinyl are the rule. If you cook, there's nowhere near enough storage for food, dishes, and cookware; extended stay hotels have more cabinet space. And the cheap dishwasher is too noisy to run while you're in the room. The heating/AC is extremely noisy, and low-efficiency. Between it, the cheap windows, and what seems like minimal insulation, we average $175 to heat less than ~1,100 SF in winter, and about the same to cool it in summer. And if you had the heating/AC system and the dishwasher running at the same time ... well, the tarmac at O'Hare would be a pretty good noise equivalent. Tenants pay for water and sewer ... another ~$25/mo on average, But they installed low-flow plumbing fixtures that take all the fun out of showering. Acoustic insulation is poor too. Inside, you hear dogs barking, people upstairs, and talking in the hallways. Externally, you hear every passing loud vehicle and loud pedestrian -- even from a high floor. Every rainfall starts a drip-drip-drip on the window frames loud enough to wake you up. And when they come to plow snow in the library parking lot at 4am ... I dunno. Maybe I'm just a light sleeper. There's decent outdoor deck on the second floor with seating and a gas BBQ. And there's a dim, tiny fitness room jam-packed with too many redundant machines. There's no reserved parking outdoors; you're on your own with very limited street parking. Nor any place to park a moving or delivery truck. Speaking of moving, there's no freight elevator and only a standard-sized door for bringing in household stuff. Expect to have your possessions beat up. Also, he rules say there's no moving allowed Friday-Sunday. But there's no manager on weekends, so people just shove their stuff through the lobby on weekends, and clog up the elevators for hours. The underground parking, for $125 per month, is a guaranteed place to park. There's a highly kinkable hose for washing off your car, and a vacuum. But with parking revenues north of $14K per month, they could do a little pressure washing and dirt sweeping, no? So if it's so bad, why haven't we moved? We don't know how long we'll be here, and it's a pain house-hunting and moving. So we deal with it.

8/15/17
Awful management

I loved this building until Feb 2017. Everything you're reading below is true - they took away all of the amenities (member events, cable in the gym, turned off every other light in the hallway to "save energy"(money), cut office hours so no one can sign for packages, etc). I got $12 back from my $500 security deposit because it needed to be "ready for move in, with no additional cleaning". I was charged for 3.5 hours of cleaning, because among other things, I did not "remove lint from the dryer, or clean the inside of the stove, and the string on a window shade was "very" bunched up". In 10 years of renting, I've never had a security deposit withheld in my life. I did accidentally crack a small light cover during move out, so they dinged $90 for that (valid), but I was a single girl in a clean, empty 1 bedroom apartment - I can't even image what they charge residents who actually don't clean or cause real damage. With all of the new buildings going up in Milwaukee, there are so many better luxury options for this price. It's not a coincidence that they have so many unit available.

6/12/17
Horrible since ownership change

I had a terrific experience living here under the building's original ownership. However, since it was bought by Sterling Properties LLC, I've had a horrible experience. Most recently, it's taken almost one month (still waiting) for them to fix my air conditioner!

5/9/17
Adults In Charge

Kudos to the new no nonsense management! Last week the party boys, who previous management let in down the hall on the second floor, had their residency quickly terminated. Good riddance. "The Standard" is still the great building I moved into several years ago

5/1/17
Great location. Terrible new management.

This is a fantastic apartment complex in a wonderful location. But unfortunately, many of its charms began to whither away in early 2017 when the highly engaged and personable onsite manager and assistant manager were replaced with a part-time manager who's rarely onsite or even accessible. Offsite management can work if it's engaged and responsive, but this hasn't been the case as messages often go completely unacknowledged. What's more, amenities—as well as some basics—began disappearing one after another, always without warning and usually without explanation. These include cable being shut down in the community room and exercise room, half the lights in the hallways being shut off as a power-saving measure, heat seemingly turned off—or at least way down—in the garage, the lobby community Keurig being removed, community events being discontinued, and simple common-area repairs lingering for weeks on end with no signs of attention. In short, since the new management took over, rent prices have remained at luxury-level highs, but the actual quality of service has begun to rapidly trickle away.

Property Manager at The Standard @ East Library, Responded To This Review

As the new management we would like to address your concerns and explain the recent changes you experienced at The Standard. We apologize for the difficulty you had contacting us. In checking the office phone and e-mail we did not find any call back information which went unanswered. Perhaps you came to the office when we were out. Although we have someone on site daily they are often out of the office showing apartments or taking contractors through the building. In an effort to provide more face to face availability we have now posted hours during which we will not leave the office. However, the most efficient way to reach us is still through e-mail. Upon investigating your comments regarding cable TV we found that although we are paying to provide 24/7 programming in both the exercise room and the community room, only the exercise room is receiving programming. Although the community TV itself is functioning, the cable carrying the behind the drywall needs to be and will be replaced. It is true that the light level in our hallways has been intentionally reduced. The fluorescent bulbs in the wall sconces have also been replaced with LEDs. This was done not only to conserve energy but also to give the hallways a more residential feel as opposed to an over lit institutional look. It is also true that the temperature in the underground parking garage was lowered in an effort to reduce natural gas consumption. New management felt heating the parking garage to 72° was both excessive and unnecessary. As you indicated free daily coffee "in the lobby" has been eliminated. This occurred because the Keurig machine belonged to the previous on-site manager which she took with her when she left. However, we continue to offer free premium coffee daily in second floor community room. Due to previous management's report of recent limited participation at community events we are reviewing both the type and frequency of future events and will be surveying residents for their input. Lastly, we apologize that the small drywall repair in the second floor hallway was left unpainted for an extended time. . After the repair was made we had difficulty matching the existing paint color because we were not left any matching paint or list of hallway paint colors when we took over. As you know we have now been able to match the color and paint the repaired area. Such delays will not happen again. We look forward to making the remainder of your stay at The Standard pleasant and invite you to contact us at your convenience.

Very nice

Great place! I have been here a short while and staff is super helpful. Management is great- attentive and FAST! The building is gorgeous and right in the middle of everything. I love it here. I don't know what people are talking about with college parties, because the building has been quiet.

3/26/17
Not worth price and terrible new management

They switched management in Feb 2017 and it's already going down hill. The new management is keeping the same rent pricing but cutting services (like daily maintenance staff to keep the place tidy and monthly social activities) and has been very rude in managing the transition for current residents. The Standard charges a serious premium for rent, but they don't cover a single utility (water, electricity, wifi, gas, etc are all on your own) or offer benefits (ex: they have storage units on every floor, but they charge for them. They're not full, but they prefer to keep them empty rather than - god forbid - offer one amenity to their residents.) With all of the new apts going up in the area, you can find a much better value.

Couldn't be happier!

We moved to Milwaukee last month and looked at more than ten different options. We decided to go with The Standard for a couple of reasons. We love being walking distance from Whole Foods, the lakefront, and a handful of restaurants and cafes, etc. The building is brand new, love that! Also, the staff worked very hard to make us feel comfortable. Of all the places we looked at, the staff at The Standard clearly wanted to help us find the right place FOR US, rather than trying to make a hard sale. We're very happy we're living at The Standard!

So far so good!

Everything is great so far. The appliances are all brand new and the amenities are fabulous. Wish the price was a little better, but I am happy with living here.

No one there

We tried to look at this apartment despite reading some negative reviews.

Not worth the money.

This place is sadly not worth the money. It is already starting to look warn (stains on the carpet, marks on the walls, and someone seems to be smoking on two of the floors as my entire floor smells of smoke). It has only been open for less than a month and a half. The "high end" amenities are already starting to fall apart. Also, the elevators get trashed every weekend as it seems college students come to party in some of the apartments. The location is great. But, this building is definitely priced way above everything else and is definitely not worth it. As you can tell now that they have constant specials as they haven't even become close to filling it. This is going to attract more college students which will just trash the building quicker. I didn't have much time to look for apartments, so I had to quickly sign something. I really wish I wouldn't have signed here.
