Des Moines combines city living with authentic Midwestern hospitality. The state capital offers varied housing choices, from downtown apartments averaging $996 for a one-bedroom to family homes in established neighborhoods. The East Village neighborhood features local boutiques and restaurants in beautifully restored historic buildings. The area around Drake University draws students and professionals alike, while Windsor Heights provides peaceful residential streets just minutes from downtown's climate-controlled skywalk system.
The Des Moines Art Center, Pappajohn Sculpture Park, and Science Center of Iowa anchor the city's arts and culture scene. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy 76 city parks and three public golf courses, including the popular Gray's Lake Park with its scenic 1.9-mile lakeside trail. Current rent trends show modest annual increases of 0.6%, keeping Des Moines housing costs lower than comparable cities.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Property Ratings at The Ridges
For an older apartment community such as this one I didn't expect the interiors to be so nice! The new owners have done well in renewing and refreshing the interior. I know from relatives that have lived here in the past there used to just be old dingy carpet and worn out appliances in the apartments, but they livened the place up with hard wood floors throughout the space! Not to mention the brand new appliances in the kitchen, all stainless steel! The man in the office I believe his name was Caleb was a great help in the application process too. Can't recommend it enough! I must say the pictures on this site really do need updated though.
We’ve been having an issue for months about the bathtub. Our water keeps leaking from the faucet of the bathtub, which makes our water bill go up, and our water isn’t even coming out of our shower head anymore. I have made many reports for maintenance and even messaged the property for assistance on fixing this issue and we never get anyone to come out to have it fixed. I have tried multiple times and have even called and there has still been no fix.

Long story short - DO NOT RENT here. What we have here living now: - mold spots - mold spot was found under the window in the bedroom. They covered it with some paint, but it didn't help. - wet spots and holes in the ceiling - almost half of our bedroom ceiling was wet and covered with small drops. In the living room a hole was found, the drops were falling from the ceiling like we live near the waterfall. Of course they can do nothing and doing everything right as the property manager said. They cannot compensate us for having this issue and inability to use a large part of the apartment we paid for, and if we have any damage we were advised to use our insurance and it is completely not their problem. Fun fact: rent payments have nothing to do with our apartment usage! Like we're paying for something other than the apartment. - roaches - we don't have so much, but it is enough. We find up to 5 every week, some of them are pregnant or were recenly, so it's never ending circle. And we definitely pay for pest control. Looks like their efforts are useless. - no manager on site since when ??? - as I mentioned we're renting since May 2023, and the manager is never there. You need to call or make an appointment for the manager to come to the leasing office in the main building, or go to another fancy community where she is sitting. - additional security deposit - may be not so relevant for the most of people living in the States, but I have to mention it - they charged us a double deposit when I moved in in December as I don't have a history in the US. I know enough families where husband or wife joined to the lease later than the spouse, no one ever asked for additional deposit. Considering all the problems we have, I just find it ridiculous. They think I'll break something, but the fact is I don't have to do anything, everything is already bad here. - cheap paint - I don't know what type of paint they do use, but it looks cheap and has stains, mostly in the bathroom - the faucet and shower head don't fit on the wall in the bathroom - don't have a shut-off valve to block cold water in the unit - they said they cannot replace the valve as in this case they need to shut off the whole building - windows are always with condensation - no matter if were have heat on of off, its cold or hot outside - trashy surrounding - can be anything, even dirty diapers. - dirty laundry at 7201, it is almost always with somebody's poo-p in the washer, dryer or on the floor.

We apologize for your ongoing experience. We have sent our contractor and team to repair your leak when this issue came up and we hope you had the solution you desired. We've also worked with our pest control vendor to address what you've reported. We would appreciate it if you reached out to our office to discuss your review and the matters within it.
This “manager” wasted my time twice and no showed on TWO different scheduled tour appointments. Haven’t even lived here and was already greeted with heinous customer service and unorganized management staff. No one even bothered to reach out stating they were going to be late/no show. 0/5 stars.
I have lived at The Ridges for many years and have enjoyed it. However, in June of 2021 new management took over and while there are some "growing pains", they really are making this a great place live. The property manager, Shelby, is very knowledge and attentive to all the residents. It has made a big difference having a responsive manager in the office as well. Even if she is out of the office, she ensures we have a way to contact her if we need something. I would definitely recommend The Ridges. It's a nice, small community close enough to everything but far enough from things for it to be quite.
